Steps Toward a Safer World: International Mine Awareness Day
Every year on April 4th people around the world take note of International Mine Awareness Day. This year’s theme, "Invest in Peace; Invest in Mine Action," is a reminder that nothing is more fragile than peace when danger lurking underground is not known. For us as a nation, our land needs to be safe for children to play on, farmers to do their work, and travelers to be anywhere.
As Advocate Prakhar Gupta, based out of Kota, I see this day as yet another reminder of how safety and the law are so intertwined. International agreements like the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention aren’t just political agreements — they are critical tools in the protection of civilians.
Mine action means saving lives and restoring dignity to those affected by conflict by raising awareness through our work. We are helping both brave deminers and the lawyers who are working to hold accountable those who are not protecting civilians. Stand with us and support our fight to have “safety for all” than just a rallying cry.
